Leitha is a breast cancer survivor and this is her story . Leitha was 36 when she found out she had breast cancer . She realized a lump on her breast while in the shower . she had moved her arm in way that was cause it to hurt. As any women she did not want to think the worst. she had mentioned it to her mother , who mentioned it to her sister . Her sister told her that ” if it hurts its not cancer ” . which gave her a sense of calmness ,so she delayed going to get it checked for a month or so . The day she did decide to go to the clinic she was told by a nurse that it was just cyst , but she still decided to schedule a mammogram anyway. March 13, 2004 she sat in the waiting room believing she was going to just take x-rays and get her cyst drained and go home. She was than called , as the nurse walked her to her room she was asked about her family and medical history . The doctor entered the room , which caused her to get nervous . He told her he wanted her to come back to do a biopsy.
” Is this just a regular biopsy or does he really think i have cancer ” she thought . The nexy day she recieved the biopsy and waited to hear back for the results. Friday comes and now she goes back for the results. Her son took the day off to go with her. As they walked into the suite they both looked at each other and she told him “You know this isn’t going to be the news we had hoped for, don’t you?” He shook his head yes, and hugged her . They waited in the waiting room for quite some time giving enough time for reality to sink in. A team of four doctors walked into the room. A hush fell on the room as the doctor sat at the desk she was sitting beside. She looked at her with tear in her eyes. she said “I don’t have good news for you. You have cancer”. She looked at her son who looked as if he couldnt move.
from that day she has been fighting cancer for a whole year . weekly treatments and surgeries . Until January of 2005 she was cancer free . ” God didn’t take me out of this world so I’m guessing he’s still got work for me to do ” she said .
What is breast cancer ? Breast cancer is when cells in the breast begin to grow rapidly . The cells usually form a tumor that can seen through x-ray or felt as a lump .This could cause cancer to spread through out the body. Breast cancer is mostly found in women but can be also found in men. It is important to understand that most breast lumps are benign and are not cancer. Although some benign lumps can put you at high risk for breast cancer . In the United States about 1 in 8 women ( 12%) will develop breast cancer . Every women should have a mammogram to check to make sure she doesn’t have breast cancer . Therefore every October major organizations organize breast cancer charities to increase the awareness of the disease and to fund it’s research.
“Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” What does this mean today? It means that the government may not imprison , fine , or impose civil liability on people or organizations based on what they say or write.” The Supreme Court has interpreted “speech” and “press” broadly as covering not only talking, writing, and printing, but also broadcasting, using the Internet, and other forms of expression”, Stated Geoffrey Stone. The freedom of speech also applies to symbolic expressions. The First Amendment does not protect speakers, however, against private individuals or organizations, such as private employers, private colleges, or private landowners. The First Amendment restrains only the government. The first amendment allow us to speak or write how we want or what we want without any restraints .
Freedom of press is the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship from the government. A journalist from New York weekly journal named John Zenger Was sued for libel. He published critical stories about public officials , but this case was overturned. His case showed the right of freedom of press to criticize public officials and that statements are a valid defense when being sued for libel. Thereafter, the first amendment was established . The amendment was the basis of freedom of press. The first amendment gives us the right to give our opinion or criticize others in print without the involvement of the government.
